as the republican primaries, the south carolina primary where romney lost by 15 points to newt gingrich. a big reason for that is that it was a lower income. it was working class and middle class republicans in south carolina flocked to gingrich and revolted against romney in that primary. it was gingrich they were calling him, you know, a vulture capitalist, that was a term used. they fullmented a backlash among romney in working class republicans. we're seeing evidence of that now. there was another poll out this week that looked at white working class voters talking about keys for obama. obama is doing quite well for working white class voters except in the deep south and appalachian, he's getting blown out there, but in places like ohio he's doing well there. romney is not someone you can really sell to thoez those voters very easily. >> we'll have to leave it there. steve kornacki, mudcat saunders, and i know mudcat is working on his campaign. we have to talk about that at sam point, mudcat. thank you for your time. >> we need to talk about taking that crook out and we can do it. aircraft

last week with newt gingrich. newt gingrich there showg hi sut toki today republican senator jim demint and former presidential candidate rick santorum threw their support behind todd akin. republican senator roy blunt, remember him? the guy who said todd akin has to get out. he put out a statement today saying that now is supporting todd akin. thstatrepuicar tsbout akin after his comments about some rapes being legitimate last month, they now say they're all in for todd akin as well. even the national republican party's sete campaign committee, the guys who said we're done when they were talking about todd aki apparently they are thinking now of not bnge with him anore. so now we know just how offended all of those republicans really were about the legitimate rape comments. they weroffended enough until the deadline passed and they couldn't get off the ballot and they couldn't replace him anymore, and now they've decided gitee g.already withhe wle the outrage just wore off. took about a month. todd akin had been heavily favored by double digits in that senate race before this whol

gingrich and rick perry on immigration to win that nomination. if he had come out and, you know, said that he was for the dream act sort of the way gingrich did, he still would have gone on to win the nomination and now he would be in a position -- >> you think so? >> -- to compete for latino votes, but he's not a skillful enough politician to anticipate that, and all he can do is say whatever is necessary to get him through the day. this comes out of his experience in the business community where, you know, all he did when he went in and closed these deals is say whatever was necessary to close the deal no matter whether it was true or not and then he'd negotiate about it later, you know, after he took over the company. so this is the world he comes out of, and it just does not equip him for politics. here is the other thing that i think has been missed in the last couple days is there's been some, you know, journalism that says, well, okay, he's not equipped for politics but he'd be a good president. no. if you're a bad politician, you're not going to be a good president either. >>

is a joke, but it's quite serious. when i met gingrich i said i hope the election is not lost by the republicans on the color line. it seems like it's almost over although i wish him well. host: an independent scholar, ann in virginia. caller: i will be watching, definitely. in fact, it's probably going to be the highest watched debates ever, just because people are anxious to see what mitt romney will talk about, because he has gone this far and it feels to me like his campaign has been i am not barack obama. we want to hear specifics. i am just concerned and his approach. i just want to see what it's going to be. i voted for the president the last election even though i am independent. there's a lot about the republican platform, the party platform that i agree with and there's a lot about the democratic party platform i don't agree with. but when it comes to leadership, it has been really embarrassing to watch mitt romney. it is just sad. so this will be his chance. peter he will pull it off or not. i am not going to vote for him just because of-principle of- he will pull i
